Abdominals for Aerialists – A Pilates Primer

Abdominals for Aerialists – A Pilates Primer

Saturday August 24, 1:00-3:00pm, $50

Pilates Matwork provides great cross-training for athletes of all types including aerialists to help improve their overall strength, coordination, balance, flexibility, and core stability. It is designed to lengthen and strengthen muscles while incorporating a multitude of principles such as concentration, control, breath and flowing movement. Lower abdominal engagement is key for aerialists but can easily be overpowered by stronger hip & shoulder muscles. This workshop will provide some information on the anatomy of the abdominals with exercises designed to help you find and feel the muscles of your core. Take this newfound knowledge into a 10-exercise Mat Pilates Program which can be used as a pre-class warm up or a home conditioning program.

Prior to discovering the aerial arts in 2012, Christine Heckel devoted 20+ years to the art of classical ballet as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. In 2009 she was introduced to Pilates and found it provided strength and control in her dance technique, as well as a method to both prevent and rehabilitate injuries. Her desire to share this with her students led to continuing her studies of movement, anatomy, and kinesiology through a contemporary, anatomical approach to Pilates. She studied at Balance Pilates Training Center in Richmond, Virginia and obtained her full certification as a STOTT PILATES® Certified Instructor in 2011. In 2013, 2015, & 2018 she attended Instructor Training Programs in Toronto, Canada at Merrithew Health & Fitness and is a Merrithew™ Instructor Trainer specializing in offering STOTT PILATES® certification courses to aspiring Pilates instructors most recently including training in Injuries & Special Populations. She is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and currently teaches Pilates & Adult Ballet at The Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA, Balance Pilates Training Center in Richmond, VA, and is Owner/Operator of Breathe Pilates Place in La Plata, MD.

Christine currently practices multiple aerial arts including: flying trapeze, lyra, acrobatic partner balancing, and dance trapeze. In 2019 she attending the Paper Doll Militia Lyra Teacher Training Program at Monarca in Flight. Christine has a lifelong interest in health and well-being and is passionate about helping her clients to maximize their physical capacity. She provides personalized programs designed to suit the specific needs of her clients from athletic to post-rehab and believes that the mind/body/spirit connection is at the core of all forms of movement.
